WOMEN AND MUSIC FOUNDATION

The Stichting Vrouw en Muziek (Dutch Women and Music Foundation) is a national organization located in Amsterdam.

The Women and Music Foundation has been established in 1987 to 'organise and stimulate activities to improve the interest into the creative work of women in music.'
A series of activities has since been developed that resulted in a wide variety of projects and publications. During its first 20 years the foundation has collected a large archive of scores, compositions, audio- and videotapes, news clippings and photographs. This archive has been transferred to Aletta, institute for women's history (see http://www.aletta.nu/).

After working many years on a volunteer basis, the national government acknowledged the importance of the foundation with a four-year grant for the period 2001-2004. Together with additional external funds, numerous new activities were undertaken, such as: the development of a strategic communication policy; the development of a website, accessible in Dutch and English; a digital catalogue of its archive, including audiovisual materials, scores, and literature; the presentation of various projects, including concert series and publications, often in conjunction with other organizations. The year 2002 saw the publication of a biography on the Dutch composer/pianist Henriette Bosmans (1895-1952), a concert serie with music by Italian Renaissance composers, and a broadly based meeting to discuss various issues crucial to the development of new directions for women and music.

In 2005 it has been decided to shift the focus from 'female composers' to 'the creative work of women in music' , in line with the foundation's initial statutes. The foundation will now also address for example musical performance art, improvised music and female musicians. The support of the conference "Cathy Berberian: Pioneer of Contemporary Vocality and Performance" is an example thereof.

The foundation issues an e-newsletter about its activities. To subscribe to the newsletter you can send an e-mail to mail@vrouwenmuziek.nl.
